Yes, I said it. The greatest and maybe the most controversial topic of the last few years. Here at Miller Ad Agency, we seem to be a close 57% yes 43% no split. The question is- why do people feel so passionate about this topic?
According to Tasting Table, Pineapple on pizza originated in 1954. A Greek immigrant, Sam Panopoulos, in Ontario Canada first debuted this topping at his restaurant that originially focused on American food, but branched into trendier and adventurous foods. From there, Hawaiian pizza came alive- the sweet and sour combination was like nothing people had ever had before. Canadians loved the combination and obviously this spread across the world as a common pizza.
Flash forward to 2017 and Hawaiian pizza suddenly becomes a big debate on social media. Even political figures joined in and added their two cents on why it is or isn’t great. In 2017, Iceland’s president came forward saying “…pizza topped with pineapple should be banned.” Who knew ‘pineapple on pizza’ could start such a trending debate over a social media platform? People from all different places, backgrounds and beliefs coming together on this fun and light topic to share their opinions.
So, what’s the point here you may ask? Well, there’s a few:
First, if the words “Do you like pineapple on pizza” come out of your mouth, know there is bound to be at least one or two people around that have a STRONG feeling one way or the other about this topic.
Second, this is a great lesson for marketing and social media. It is always a great idea to get your audience as engaged as you can. Asking light hearted questions such as this will pull your audience in and hopefully improve your engagement. Not only using these topics that are already out there, but also connecting a fun comparative question or anything that will start a discussion about your business is great marketing. Who knows, you could end up trending on Twitter for the debate you start.
Third, no matter your opinion on the matter, own it! If you like pineapple on your pizza, go for it. If you hate it… well you’re wrong… just kidding of course, there are plenty of other delicious toppings you can enjoy on pizza. Whether you like it combined with Canadian bacon, bbq, jalapenos, green peppers, or you prefer any of those toppings on their own I think we can all agree on one thing, pizza is a staple food.
