As a Communications major and Advertising Minor at SMU, I have spent the past three years learning about public relations, advertising, branding, strategic communication, etc. in the classroom. While these courses provided a strong foundation, nothing compares to applying what I learned in a real agency environment. I am so grateful that Miller Ad Agency allowed me the chance to bridge this gap. Now as I enter my senior year at SMU, I do so with confidence that comes from the real-world experience this internship provided.
Looking back, my internship at Miller can be defined by a series of “firsts.” Every new experience challenged me and helped me grow professionally because I learned that growth comes from stepping outside of your comfort zone. Whether I was learning new software, attending a commercial shoot, researching AI tools, or contributing to client projects, each unfamiliar assignment taught me something valuable. I quickly realized that making mistakes wasn’t something to fear and that it was simply part of the learning process. Every challenge helped build my confidence and prepared me for the next opportunity.
My First Look Behind the Camera
During one of my very first days at Miller Ad Agency, I had the opportunity to attend a commercial shoot and watch a commercial come to life with the rest of the team. It felt even more rewarding to play a small role by assisting with outfits, reviewing the script, and helping with the location of the shoot.
Watching the process unfold gave me an entirely new appreciation for the teamwork required to bring a creative idea to life.
My First AI Research Project
One of the assignments I worked on involved researching artificial intelligence tools for fashion. My goal was to find software that could place clothing onto AI-generated models while accurately replicating the patterns and colors of each garment.
This project gave me the opportunity to test several different platforms and compare their results to determine which tools performed the most accurately. There was plenty of trial and error in this process as some platforms recreated the clothing pattern correctly but changed the colors, while others handled colors well but struggled with detailed designs.
The experience taught me that research requires patience. Finding the right solution rarely happens on the first try, so experimentation is important to discover what works best. It also reinforced how AI is becoming an increasingly valuable tool for supporting creative work.
My First Experience Learning Agency Tools
Like many interns, I arrived with classroom knowledge but quickly realized there were many industry-specific tools I had never used before. At Miller, these tools were Basecamp and ESP. However, within my first few days, both became part of my everyday routine.
Learning these programs helped me understand how agencies organize projects, communicate across departments, and manage multiple client deadlines simultaneously. ESP allowed our team to organize client jobs and campaign materials, and Basecamp became the central hub for communication and daily assignments.
This experience reminded me that every workplace has its own systems and processes. Being adaptable and willing to learn new technology is just as important as the communication skills developed in the classroom.
My First Real Client Assignment
One of the biggest lessons I learned throughout my internship was that my work mattered beyond receiving a grade.
Throughout the summer, I contributed to real client projects by creating social media content, writing captions, proofreading commercials, and organizing client materials that would ultimately be seen by actual audiences. Instead of completing assignments for hypothetical brands, I was helping produce work that clients would review, approve, and use.
While SMU provided countless opportunities to practice through classroom projects, Miller Ad Agency showed me what it truly means to apply those skills in a professional setting. Seeing classroom concepts become real client work gave me a much deeper understanding of the advertising industry and the responsibility that comes with producing work that represents a client’s brand.
More Than a Summer of Firsts
Although I learned countless technical skills throughout my internship, the biggest takeaway was understanding that growth comes from being willing to try something you’ve never done before.
Every “first”, whether it was attending a commercial shoot, researching AI tools, learning agency software, or contributing to client work, helped me become more confident and prepared.
Most importantly, I learned that internships are not about knowing everything on your first day. They are about asking questions and embracing feedback.
I am incredibly grateful to everyone at Miller Ad Agency for creating an environment where I felt supported, challenged, and encouraged to grow.
